Dressage legend Charlotte Dujardin and Mount St John Freestyle finished the year in scintillating style to become 2020 LeMieux national champions, after two exceptional days of competition in the international indoor arena at Hartpury.
The duo secured the prestigious title after achieving the highest combined score from the two tests at the LeMieux National Grand Prix Championships 2020 – the LeMieux Grand Prix and the Horse Health Freestyle.
Charlotte and Mount St John Freestyle, who took bronze together at the 2018 World Equestrian Games, topped the standings for the Grand Prix on the first day with a phenomenal score of 83.04.
The top 15 combinations from the Grand Prix then went forward to contest the Freestyle on the second and final day of the championships yesterday.
Charlotte and Mount St John Freestyle continued from where they had left off on the opening day, finishing in first place again with a superb score of 90.20, for a combined total of 173.24.
Charlotte also finished in second place overall riding Gio (167.150), with Carl Hester and En Vogue in third spot (163.6).
“It’s fantastic to have had these national championships and what a way to start my Christmas!” said Charlotte.
The showpiece event, run by British Dressage in accordance with Covid protocols, featured six former national champions among its 30 horse-and-rider combinations.
Phillip Cheetham, Director of Equine at Hartpury, said: “Many congratulations to Charlotte and Mount St John Freestyle on becoming national champions after what has been a fantastic couple of days.
“We were absolutely delighted to host such a prestigious competition and provide a platform for so many great riders and horses to showcase their talents.
“It was extremely disappointing that we weren’t able to welcome spectators this year, but hopefully everyone who watched the event online was still able to enjoy the event and get behind their favourite riders and horses.”
